Resume Keywords by Industry: Lists for 12 Fields (2026)

Resume keywords by industry for tech, finance, healthcare, marketing, sales and seven more fields, with how to choose them from a posting and place them.

Resume keywords are the specific skills, tools, certifications and job titles a recruiter types into an applicant tracking system when searching for candidates. The right ones depend on your industry and, above all, on the posting in front of you, so use the lists below as a starting point and confirm each word against the job description.

How to use these lists

A keyword list is only useful if the words match the job you are applying for. Work through it in this order:

  1. Open the job posting and highlight every hard skill, tool, license and job title.
  2. Compare those words with the list for your industry below. The overlap is your priority set.
  3. Use the posting's exact spelling. "Salesforce CRM" and "CRM" are different search terms.
  4. Place each keyword where you can show it in use: a bullet point with a result, then your skills section, then your summary for the most important two or three.
  5. Leave out anything you cannot talk about confidently in an interview.

Hard skills (tools, methods, certifications) are words a recruiter can search for precisely. Soft skills such as "communication" are hard to search for, so show them through results in your bullets.

Putting keywords into a bullet point

A keyword carries more weight inside an achievement than in a list. Compare these two lines for a financial analyst:

Weak: Skills: forecasting, variance analysis, Power BI
Strong: Built a 12-month rolling forecast in Excel and Power BI and ran monthly
variance analysis for a $40M cost center, cutting forecast error from
        9% to 4%

The strong version contains the same three keywords, and it gives the recruiter a result to ask about. The numbers above are invented for the example; use your own.

Finding the keywords in a specific posting

The lists in this article cover each field broadly. For a single application, the posting is the better source. You can paste a job description into the keyword extractor to pull out its skills and tools in one list, then check your resume against them. Every job title on japply also has its own ATS keyword page with the terms most associated with that role.

Frequently asked questions

How many keywords should a resume have?

There is no fixed number. Aim to cover the hard skills, tools and qualifications the posting lists that you genuinely have, each used once or twice in context. Repeating a word many times adds nothing for the recruiter who reads the file.

Should I put keywords in a separate skills section?

Yes, and also in your bullets. The skills section makes the words easy to scan, while the bullets show you have used them.

Do soft skills count as keywords?

They are hard to search for precisely. Show them through results, for example "trained 12 new hires" for leadership, and keep the skills list for tools and methods.

What if I don't have a keyword the posting asks for?

Leave it out. If you have a close equivalent, name it plainly, such as "Tableau (similar to Power BI)", and be ready to explain the overlap in the interview.

With the posting's own words in your summary, skills and best bullets, your resume answers the searches the recruiter is about to run.
