How long should a resume be? One page or two

Resume4 min2026-10-27

Keep a resume to one page unless you have an advanced degree or about 10 years of relevant experience. How to decide, what to cut and what two pages need.

A resume should be one page unless you have an advanced degree or extensive experience, and then two pages is acceptable. MIT's Career Advising and Professional Development office uses the same line: one page, or two if you hold an advanced degree or have 10 or more years of experience. Length follows relevance, not a rule.

The one-page rule, and where it comes from

Recruiters read a resume quickly. MIT's career office says recruiters spend just a few seconds on average looking at a resume, so a format that makes the relevant information immediately visible matters more than a complete history. A single page forces you to choose, and the choice is the useful part: you keep what supports this application and cut what does not.

The same office's checklist asks "Have you kept it to one page?" and then names the exception: "You may use two pages if you have an advanced degree or extensive experience (10+ years)." Treat that as a ceiling, not a target.

When one page is right

  • You are a student, a recent graduate or early in your career.
  • You have fewer than about ten years of relevant experience.
  • You are changing fields, so most of your past is only partly relevant.
  • The posting asks for a short document.

If your first draft runs to a page and a half, the usual cause is detail on old or unrelated jobs, not a lack of space. See how many jobs to list for how to budget detail by recency.

When two pages is fine

Two pages work when every line on the second page is relevant. That tends to be true for:

  • people with ten or more years of experience in the same field,
  • candidates with an advanced degree and publications, patents or projects that matter to the role,
  • senior roles where scope (budget, team size, systems) needs space to explain.

A second page that carries only a few lines looks unfinished. Either cut to one page or add enough relevant material that the page is at least half full.

How to cut to one page

  1. Start with the posting. MIT advises building a resume for a specific position: look at the skills required and select experiences where you demonstrated those skills. Keep a longer master document and cut from it each time.
  2. Trim older roles to one or two lines. Detail belongs to the last few years.
  3. Merge short or similar roles into a single entry where it stays honest.
  4. Remove "responsible for" statements. Describe accomplishments, not duties. Quantify where you can.
  5. Check margins and font before you shrink them. MIT's checklist recommends consistent margins between 0.5 and 1.0 inches and a font size of 10 to 12 points. If you have to go below those to fit a page, the content is too long.
  6. Drop filler sections such as an objective, generic interests or "references available on request". Employers assume references are available.

Length for ATS and recruiters

Applicant tracking systems read text, not pages, and page count does not change what text the file contains. The constraint is the human reader. A recruiter who finds the key facts on the first page will often read on; one who has to dig will not. Put your strongest, most relevant material on page one in either case. For the file and format side, see the ATS-friendly resume guide.

A quick decision test

Read your resume and ask for each bullet: would I be comfortable if the interviewer asked about this? If not, cut it. Then ask whether the page limit is forcing out a stronger bullet than one you kept. Replace weak with strong before you add a page.

You can paste your finished resume and the job description into the free ATS checker to see which of the posting's keywords you already cover, then trim anything that does not support them.

FAQ

Is a two-page resume bad? No, if the content is relevant. MIT's office allows two pages for people with an advanced degree or about 10 or more years of experience.

Should a student have a one-page resume? Yes. Early-career resumes rarely have enough relevant material for a second page.

Does resume length matter to an ATS? The software reads the text in the file, so length is a human-reader issue, not a parsing one.

What if I have a long career? Keep recent roles detailed, summarize older ones in a line each, and keep the total to two pages.
